final project

my final piece that i have agonized over for months is finally over. what ive realized is that going back to hawaii means going back to my childhood, back to my grandparent's house where i picked grapefruit and tangerines and played in sprinklers on hot days. Having so much stuff arrive at my portland apartment that are childhood mementos pushed me to confront these things and contemplate their significance (or lack of) in my life now. Issues like feminism, our romanticized view of Native Americans and toys we play with as children and now as adults are confronted in a book report-style presentation. I'm glad that I have something physical to present and am no longer stuck in my ideas. hopefully this summer i can create as much as i can and motivate myself to just make instead of think.

I love the concept of collections from memories or past travels, which is what I'm trying to recreate in my work

I am really interested in old drawings, especially old etchings and prints depicting nature. They are before the camera's time, so they have something especially human and odd about them. I also feel like perhaps people back then enjoyed learning about the vast world of animalia and fauna, yet we rarely see things like this today.
